Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley nominated for Golden Globe Awards for Hamnet
This year’s Golden Globe winners will be announced at the 83rd ceremony in Los Angeles on January 11.
Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal have been shortlisted for major acting honours at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, earning recognition for their roles in Hamnet.
The film, adapted from the novel by Maggie O’Farrell and directed by Chloé Zhao, centres on William Shakespeare, his wife Agnes, and their son Hamnet.
Buckley is nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama), while Mescal is named in the category for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama).
Their fellow nominees include actors from Die My Love, Sentimental Value, After The Hunt, Hedda, Sorry, Baby, One Battle After Another, Frankenstein, Jay Kelly, and Sentimental Value.
Dublin-based production company Element Pictures received three nominations for Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
The film is nominated for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons earning acting nods in their respective categories.
In a joint statement, Element Pictures co-founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe said the team was “thrilled” with the recognition and noted their decade-long collaboration with Lanthimos.
Blue Moon, filmed in Ireland and depicting composer Lorenz Hart’s struggles with mental health and alcoholism, is also a contender for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Ethan Hawke is nominated for Best Male Actor – Musical or Comedy for his performance in the film.
Nominations across supporting and lead performance categories include Emily Blunt, Elle Fanning, Ariana Grande, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan, and Teyana Taylor.
Director nominees this year are Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler, Guillermo del Toro, Jafar Panahi, Joachim Trier, and Chloé Zhao.
The Best Motion Picture – Drama category features Frankenstein, Hamnet, It Was Just an Accident, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Values, and Sinners.
In the Comedy or Musical category, nominees include Blue Moon, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, No Other Choice, Nouvelle Vague, and One Battle After Another.
The limited series All Her Fault, adapted from Andrea Mara’s novel and filmed in Ireland, is nominated for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture. Sarah Snook is shortlisted for Best Female Actor – Television – Limited Series for her performance in the show.
In comedy television, Jenna Ortega, nominated for her role in Wednesday, shot in Ireland, appears alongside Kristen Bell, Ayo Edebiri, Selena Gomez, Natasha Lyonne, and Jean Smart in the Best Actress – Television Series (Musical or Comedy) category.
