Planning permission granted for Cillian Murphy and Yvonne McGuinness' Dingle cinema

Cillian Murphy and his wife, Yvonne McGuinness', plan to redevelop the Phoenix cinema in Dingle have been approved.

The cinema, purchased by the couple in 2024, originally opened in 1919 before closing its doors in 2021 as a result of the pandemic.

Their proposed plans included retaining the Phoenix's function as a cinema, while expanding the space to include a performance space, exhibition areas, art studios, café, bar, and restaurant as well as a redesigned courtyard. The redevelopment project secured €933,000 in Government funding before locals objected to the project, arguing the space should be reserved for housing.

Murphy has long been associated with the West Kerry Gaeltacht, as the actor's parents holidayed in the area for decades. He now spends extended periods there with McGuinness and their two sons.

"Daingean Uí Chúis/Dingle has waited decades for an arts centre, and the Phoenix will provide a much-needed space for community to gather, create and celebrate the unique culture, heritage, and creativity of this special place," they said in a statement.

"We're excited about the opportunities this space will create for both the people of Dingle and the wider Irish arts community.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey so far. We look forward to the next chapter as we work together to bring this vision to life."
