Johnny Depp makes surprise Comic-Con appearance as Ebenezer Scrooge

Johnny Depp surprised fans at San Diego Comic-Con by appearing in full costume as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming film Ebenezer which is set for cinemas this November.

The unannounced appearance began outside the convention in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, where Paramount recreated an 1880's British Christmas village complete with a "Scrooge and Marley" storefront. Remaining in character throughout, Depp wandered through the activation, interacting with fans before making his way to Hall H.

Paramount used the convention to launch the film's first trailer, with Depp introducing the footage in Hall H while remaining in character as Scrooge.

Directed by Ti West (X, Pearl and MaXXXine), Ebenezer offers a gothic reimagining of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. The film stars Depp as Ebenezer Scrooge alongside Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley and Charlie Murphy.

The film will be Depp's first major Hollywood roll since his widely publicised 2022 defamation trial with former wife and actress Amber Heard.

Following the legal battle, the actor largely stepped away from blockbuster productions, instead starring in the French historical drama Jeanne du Barry and directing Modì: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. He is also set to appear opposite Penélope Cruz in the forthcoming thriller Day Drinker.
