New Irish Songs To Hear This Week
Listen to some our favourite Irish releases from the past week below
SPRINTS, ‘Need’
It’s new album day for Dublin punks SPRINTS, who’ve dropped a Q4 contender for album of the year. Their sophomore All That Is Over keeps up the noisy momentum stirred by their 2024 debut Letter To Self, while offering a more flushed-out cinematic sound.
Their glorious rage and energy is still there for all to hear. ‘Need’ - opening with a megaphone squawk and soaring with wailing police siren guitars throughout - is a pounding number that deals with wanting someone so bad it’s driving you nuts.
“The debut was a brick and mortar guitar rock album and I think it had to be that,” singer Karla Chubb told Hot Press. “[This time] there was a lot of purposeful building of atmospherics in terms of textures, instruments, and sampling.
“I was listening to a lot of ambient music, because I read a lot on the road and I can't listen to the lyrics while I'm reading because it distracts me too much. So a lot of early Aphex Twin. The Brian Eno airport albums. A lot of Portishead and a lot of early Massive Attack.”

Elaine Mai, ‘We Go On’ feat. Sinéad White
Artist and producer Elaine Mai has released her second album For Us with track ‘We Go On’ featuring singer-songwriter Sinéad White.
With a backdrop of cathartic electronic dance production, Mai has a skill for eloquently addressing themes of intergenerational trauma, belonging, safety and release in her music. This talent is on full display with ‘We Go On’. It immerses listeners with an atmospheric, ambient sound, punctuated with futuristic synth tones. White’s vocals shine through, soaring through the soundscape as she delivers strong lyrics about resilience.
“Writing this piece, I wanted to let go of expectations and focus on the journey rather than the outcome,” Mai said.

Amble, ‘Socrates Smiled’
After a year that has so far seen them pack out the main stage at Electric Picnic and release a chart-topping debut album (with a few sold-out 3Arena shows penned for the end of the year), pop-folk extraordinaries Amble have dropped their Hand Me Downs EP.
It was put together alongside producer Philip Weinrobe, who’s worked with the Big Thief's Adirenne Lenker. That sound comes across on these four tracks. ‘Socrates Smiles' sees Amble’s quaint, deep crooning charm go in a new direction, with their philosophical musings accompanied by drums and bass, as well some American-influenced folk instrumentation.

The Academic, ‘Bye Bye Baby’
The lucky punters who gathered to the Hot Press chatroom at Electric Picnic will have already been treated to an acoustic version of Westmeath indie heroes The Academic's latest number.
‘Bye Bye Baby’ shines with descending guitar lines, a straightforward, catchy chorus and lyrics that are forlorn and bitersweet. There are shades of Blur and Beatles here, but it’s still unmistakably The Academic, who sound like they’re heading in a darker, matured direction.

Halcyon low, ‘Clover’
Cork shoegazers Halcyon low have delivered a sweet wall of sludging noise on their latest tune, which whirls with guitar feedback and emotion. They balance the dark and the heavenly, ebbing between segments of distorted riffage and gaps of chorus pedals with ethereal vocals. Dreamlike is the word.
Lyrically, the band say that ‘Clover’ “looks back on a carefree reckless time, finding joy in going against the grain and somehow making it out the other side.”

Pat Lagoon, ‘TRACES’
Rapper Pat Lagoon has released new single ‘TRACES’.
Recorded and co-produced with mixing engineer Adam Shanahan (MYFAULT), ‘TRACES’ encapsulates the feeling of transitioning from summer to autumn. The song blends alternative hip-hop with neo-soul and upbeat house, creating a vivid sound that is fresh and full of colour.
“It’s about living in the moment, knowing it won’t last forever, but giving yourself enough to enjoy it anyway,” said Lagoon of the track.
It’s bright, fun and uplifting; the kind of song that brightens the day even as memories of warm summer days start to fade and grey clouds roll in.
Paul Sherry, ‘Peace In Mind’
Heart-on-sleeve, anthemic roots rock with some pop punk sentiments are the order of the day on the title track of Paul Sherry’s fourth album. There is a neat and welcome juxtaposition between the headbanging music and the introspective, meditative wisdom of the lyrics.
A full time touring, teaching and session musician as a solo artist and with the acclaimed Gráinne Duffy band, Sherry has ‘surprise released’ this new LP.
“It represents growth, change, memory and unity,” he says of the record. “Because I’m deeply spiritualistic, I found myself drawn to the Enso symbol, which can represent one’s state of mind artistically, philosophically or whatever way we choose.
“The sense of freedom associated with it really resonated with me, and I think you can hear this expression across the album. It embodies me, doing what I love, in the way I want to, with amazing people by my side.”

Barbagianni, Queen of Verona
Irish electronic duo Barbagianni’s latest single, 'Queen of Verona', marks a significant evolution in their musical journey. Known for their atmospheric electro-pop sound, the duo has consistently captivated audiences with their emotive melodies and intricate production. With 'Queen of Verona', Barbagianni collaborates with vocalist Amy Naessens and Gary O'Reilly, adding a new layer of depth and emotion to their sonic landscape.
Queen of Verona delves into themes of love, loss, and longing, drawing inspiration from the romanticized imagery of Verona, Italy. The city’s rich history and association with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet provide the setting for the song’s narrative.

Boy M5, ‘St James’
Rising Indie-rock Band Boy M5’s new record, ‘St.James', is a track that dives into the themes of love, doubt and hope set against an apocalyptic backdrop.
“It’s about finding light in the darkness” says frontman Kyle O’Neill.
‘St.James’ is the latest step towards Boy M5’s debut album, following a string of releases that has seen them make multiple festival appearances.

Penny'sband, 'Water From A Stone'
Blending hook-laced riffs with bittersweet nostalgia, 'Water from a Stone' captures the restless energy of being young and the ache of fleeting connections.
Since their sold-out debut at Belfast’s Union Bar in January 2025, penny’sband have built a reputation for electric live performances. They’ve supported acts including Hot Girl, Panic Over and Chris Boldt.
They also brought their sound south to Kerry and Limerick, and hit festival stages such as the Hilden Beer & Music Festival.
This autumn, they play Output Belfast (Ulster Sports Club, supporting Basht.) and Chordblossom’s Gifted at Empire Music Hall (supporting Panic Over), seeking to cement their place in Ireland’s new wave of guitar music.
KIDD, ‘SUSI’
Meath-based hip hop artist KIDD has released his second single ‘SUSI’.
Though he may be new to the game, KIDD certainly knows his stuff. His latest release is an ode to the SUSI grant that many Irish college students know and love. It's fresh, well-balanced in its production, and full of sharp, memorable bars. Mixing classic 90's hip hop sounds with Irish flair, this new KIDD on the block is certainly a name to watch.

Little Known, 'It Should Be Easy'
Ahead of their performance on Irish Music Week 2025, indie rock band Little known have released 'It should be easy'.'
'It Should Be Easy’ is an alt-rock track that blends indie energy with hopeful lyricism. Driving guitars and a powerful rhythm section rise into a cascading chorus form the basis for this record.

Inni-K, ‘Peppersome’
Inni-K has released her new album Still A Day with track ‘Peppersome’.
Inni-K is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, composer and lyricist with tremendous talent in every facet of her creativity. Her background in sean-nós and traditional Irish music is not lost on listeners, especially not in ‘Peppersome’. It’s an instrumental-driven track, in which her trad roots shine through in soulful fiddle while her gentle humming reminds us of her genre-defying innovation. Conveying soul without words, she delivers stunning vocal harmonies with the strings, melting into stirring folk-infused melodies. Absolutely breathtaking work from an artist like no other.

Moon Landing, ‘Streetflowers’
Belfast-based alternative band Moon Landing have released new single ‘Streetflowers’ ahead of their upcoming EP We’ll Come Back As Birds.
‘Streetflowers’ is a breezy, feel-good indie rock track rich with bright guitar melodies and peppy drum lines. The vocals smooth and full of heart, reminiscent of The Strokes, Wilco or Neutral Milk Hotel. The lyrics are equally nostalgic, recalling an era of dark themes set to cheery tunes (à la Paramore). However, the track overall sets the tone for Moon Landing’s signature sound: fun, fresh and full of life and light. Summer’s not over when ‘Streetflowers’ is playing.

3rd Degree, 'For The Night'
Waterford indie/alternative dance artist 3rd Degree has released his new track 'For The Night'.
The track is the second glimpse into his forthcoming debut album Connected.
A collaboration with label boss Micko Roche, “For The Night” pushes deeper into the darker, underground edges of 3rd Degree’s sound.
"I wanted this track to carry that underground edge — dark, psychedelic, and alive. The bass and vocals dance in the shadows, while Micko came through with some seriously tasty guitar work.”
To accompany the release, photographer and videographer Kieran Power has crafted a striking music video, drawing on raw footage from Ireland’s breakdancing scene.
Eppie, ‘Sunbathing in Winter’
3-piece psychedelic band Eppie have released their new single ‘Sunbathing in Winter’.
The track is a nostalgic pop song about reuniting with a childhood friend.

‘Wild!’ Masterfully employs harp and vocals to reflect its theme. The track opens with slightly chaotic yet cohesive harp notes, causing the listener to feel like they are in the wilderness.
It features delicate, ethereal vocals that, when paired with light harp notes, create a serene feel.
The track ends with chaotic, folky notes, catching the listener off guard.
Neil Peter Bailey, ‘Besotted By You’
Rock singer Neil Peter Bailey has released new single ‘Besotted By You’.
If Bailey is making one statement with ‘Besotted By You’, it’s this: rock n’ roll is far from dead. His powerful vocals are reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand’s top hits, switching effortlessly from breathy versus to a full-chested chorus to soaring riffs. It’s cut through with scorching guitar lines from Barry Young and driven by powerhouse drums from Cion O’Callaghan. It’s head-banging, red-hot rock song rich with talent.
Conor Furlong, ‘A Rowboat In A Storm’
Conor Furlong has released his seventh album A Twist of Fate featuring ‘A Rowboat In A Storm’.
“My focus on this album was to make as cohesive an album as I could,” said the singer. “That might seem obvious but, to make a great album, it isn’t enough to have a bunch of great songs, they have to fit together, each being like a piece in a jigsaw puzzle.

It opens with soft, monotone vocals that gradually build into a passion filled chorus.

The atmosphere created is uplifting and energising, full of life and joy. She's blending soul and house in a way seen rarely before, and we can't wait to hear more.
