Cillian Murphy, Myrid Carten, Seamus McGarvey among British Independent Film Award nominees
The 2025 BIFA Awards will take place on November 30 in London.
Nominations for the 2025 British Independent Film Awards have been announced with several Irish stars and productions on the shortlist.
Among the nominations is Cillian Murphy for Best Lead Performance in Netflix drama Steve, which he both starred in and produced.
Murphy was previously nominated for British Independent Film Awards in 2006 for The Wind That Shakes the Barley, 2007 for Sunshine and 2012 for Broken.
Steve followed Murphy's work in Small Things Like These, a film adaptation of the Claire Keegan novel by the same name. Murphy discussed Steve in a recent interview with Hot Press.
Shortlisted in the same category is Jennifer Lawrence for dark comedy-drama Die My Love. Armagh-born Seamus McGarvey (Atonement, Nocturnal Animals) is nominated for Best Cinematographer for his work on the film.
Die My Love — which was co-written by Tony Award-winning Irish playwright Enda Walsh — is set to hit Irish cinemas on November 7.
Pillion, an LGBTQ+ rom-com co-produced between the UK and Ireland by Irish company Element Pictures, is shortlisted in several categories including Best British Independent Film.
Production credits on Pillion include Element Pictures co-founders Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe as well as Emma Norton. Norton is best known for producing the TV adaptations of Sally Rooney novels Normal People and Conversations With Friends.
Guiney and Lowe also co-produced the recently released sci-fi dark comedy, Bugonia, starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons.
In the Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary category, Donegal filmmaker Myrid Carten earned a nomination for her film A Want In Her. The film was screened earlier this year at the Dublin International Film Festival.
A Want In Her is also shortlisted for Best Feature Documentary and for the Raindance Maverick Award, which is awarded to "highlight innovation, uniqueness of vision, maverick filmmaking and risk-taking" in limited budget films, according to the British Independent Film Awards.
Carten directed, wrote, cinematographed and starred in the A Want In Her. She was joined by IFTA-nominated Irish producers Tadhg O'Sullivan (Song of Granite) and Róisín Geraghty (Sunlight).
Irish sound designer Steve Fanagan was nominated in the Best Sound category for his work on Daniel Day Lewis' comeback film Anemone.
Fanagan previously lent his talents to Oscar-nominated Irish language film An Cailín Ciúin as well as IFTA-nominated series Normal People, Conversations With Friends and Swan Song.
Anemone was also shortlisted for Best Original Music by Bobby Krlic (aka The Haxan Cloak) who has produced for various musical artists including Björk, Father John Misty and Troye Sivan.
The 2025 British Independent Film Awards ceremony will take place on November 30 at the Roundhouse in London.
