The Lost Children Of Tuam to be released in Irish cinemas next month

The Lost Children of Tuam, winner of Best Irish Film at this year's Galway Film Fleadh, will hit Irish screens on September 25.

Directed by Frank Berry, the film tells the real-life story of history enthusiast Catherine Corless, and her quest to uncover the truth about the Tuam Mother and Baby Home in Co. Galway. The "devastating possibility" of as many as 796 children buried in unmarked graves gives way to a campaign for justice and touches on the lasting impact felt by survivors in Ireland today.

It is based on Dan Barry's 2017 New York Times article of the same name and stars BAFTA-winner Monica Dolan known for Mr Bates vs The Post Office, and co-stars Andrew Bennett known for God's Creatures and Ian McElhinney known for Game of Thrones. 

The screenplay was written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz and produced by Liam Neeson, among others.

"The story of Tuam is so important and is so resonant today in terms of children and who is deemed worthy of care and who is not," shared Neeson.

"It is a shattering and vital interrogation into the past that carries into our present.”

A state apology was issued after an excavation in 2017, which confirmed the presence of juvenile remains on the grounds. A full exhumation commenced in July 2025 to recover, identify, and rebury the remains with dignity in a dedicated memorial garden at the Tuam site.

Volta Pictures Distribution will release the film in Irish cinemas in September, with Picturehouse Entertainment releasing in the UK in October. The independent film distribution company has a wide catalogue of notable work including The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Guard.
