Wet Wet Wet have told sectarian elements to stay away from their Christmas gig in the Belfast Odyssey Arena, which went on sale last week.
This follows on from a previous gig at the venue at which Rangers regalia-wearing fans sung Loyalist chants. “I’m a big football man,” Ulster Unionist Councillor Jim Rodgers tells the Belfast Telegraph, “but football, Gaelic and rugby tops can cause offence and the last thing anyone needs is to bring one in to an inappropriate venue – such as a music event. People can be offended. The group have to respect that they’re playing to a mixed audience. They should not create divisions.” In a follow-up interview with the Telegraph, the band’s Graeme Clark insists: “We’re no bigots. We’re not politically motivated. If you listen to our music, it’s all about peace and love and tolerance. Of course there are some Rangers and Celtic fans who are sectarian and who carry that flag, but they’re not in my phone book.”
