Turner's UK Breakthrough
Juliet Turner has scored as significant breakthrough in the UK with the news that her latest single `Take The Money And Run' has been playlisted by BBC Radio 2.
The Fermanagh born singer has been steadily building a profile in Britain since the release of her album Burn The Black Suit there in 2002. A platinum album in Ireland with sales in excess of 30,000, the results to date in the UK have been encouraging with her label East West remaining confident that they can emulate the success achieved by Turner on home turf.
Their painstaking approach to the task is reflected in the time spent remixing the single, with the final version - restyled by the Scandanavian hitmakers Waterfall Productions - having been some seven months in incubation.
“It's a great mix, totally different to the original,” says manager Derek Nally. “It's very sparse, with the vocal right up there in the mix, which is the way radio programmers seem to want it now. Juliet really liked it when she heard it, which is important.”
The song is on Radio 2's B playlist, which guarantees a minimum of 20 plays a week. “Often a track from a relatively unknown artist - which Juliet is - would go on the C list, and then it might be promoted to the B list if the reaction was good enough,” Nally elaborates, “so it's great for us to go straight onto the B list. To get from the 20,000 sales mark up to 200,000, you need a track that gets saturation play.”
Clearly, much depends on whether or not the track clicks with the listening public, but there is no doubt that its playlisting by the BBC represents a coup for Turner. “A lot of other stations around the UK, including the likes of Capitol Radio, take their lead from the BBC,” one radio insider told hotprress.com, “so if it goes well there, the record could see a lot more radio action. And if that happens, then the single just might be the start of something really big.”
The track has been listed for the week beginning Monday January 6th. Its progress will be watched with interest by the Irish industry - in the meantime, a fresh breakthrough of this kind by an Irish artist represents a very encouraging start to the new year.
