The Weeknd and Daft Punk special episode of Hot Press Classics out now
Party monster Paul Nolan is ready to show his true colors, as he breaks down The Weeknd’s 2016 global smash Starboy. Then he’s joined by Kilian Murphy for a discussion of Discovery, the 2001 electronic classic by The Weeknd’s sometime collaborators, Daft Punk.
Ahead of The Weeknd's massive shows in Croke Park this weekend, Hot Press Classics dives in The Weeknd’s 2016 global smash Starboy, accompanied by an exploration of Daft Punk's 2001 record Discovery.
Kicking off the episode, Paul Nolan looks back at The Weeknd's storied career, starting with his potential-filled debut mixtape House Of Balloons , mixing atmospheric R'n'B grooves with magnificently dark melodies.
He also discusses the massive cult following amassed by Abel Tesfaye since House Of Balloons and explores the reasons for his success, including his musicianship, and his subversive, rebellious image.
He also looks at the explosion of his career with 2015 Beauty Behind the Madness, and the 2016 Starboy, and the pop genius of House Of Balloons - but also at his failed endeavours in the film and TV world with The Idol and Hurry Up Tomorrow.
Finally, Nolan examines The Weeknd's brilliant collaborations with Daft Punk on Starboy, including the record's title track and the mega hit 'I Feel It Coming'.
Additionally, Nolan is joined by Kilian Murphy to explore the French electronic duo's 2001 classic Discovery, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and its impressive sonic and visual cohesiveness.
They also discuss the evolution of Daft Punk throughout their career, the consistent quality of each of their four records, and the completeness of their artistic vision.
The duo also chat about the atmospheric aesthetic of French electronic music, the mix of joyful melodies and melancholic sounds on the record, and their brilliant use of autotune.
Nolan and Murphy also explore the brilliance of Daft Punk's live shows, their hit-filled final album and the end of the band.
Find out about this and more in the new episode of Hot Press Classics, out now.
