Hot Press Classics is back with its new instalment, today focusing a pair of landmark Boards of Canada EPs - Twoism from 1995 and 2000’s In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country.
In the new episode, Paul Nolan is joined by Hot Press contributor Killian Murphy to discuss Boards of Canada's storied career, including their brand new album Inferno, fan reaction online and the evolution of their style.
They also explore the early brilliance of the electronic duo, their origin story in Edinburgh, with the mystery surrounding them and their brilliant use of self-mythologising.
Additionally, the duo also tackle Boards of Canada’s longstanding connection what Warp Records, their musical inspiration including My Bloody Valentine, and their huge cult following over the years.
They also talk about the mystical and cult-like themes of the duo’s output, the dark and cinematic element of their sound, and their 13-years hiatus preceding the release of Inferno.
The new instalment also explores the very sparse live outputs of Boards of Canada, and the mystery surrounding the two EPs Twoism and In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, with their original limited release and their eventual re-issues via Warp Records.
Focusing on Twoism, they chat about how the EP sets the template for the rest of Boards of Canada’s output, its simplicity and yet deep complexity of the the production.
Speaking of In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country, the duo posits that this effort marks one of the best EPs ever published, the innovative quality of the work and its all-encompassing style, despite its 4 song track-list.
