Shite, onions 'n' Bono: new Irish DVDs for release
This week sees the release of two all-Irish DVDs: one about an obsessed Bono fan, another on Celtic punk bands
Kathy Gilfillan's cult 2000 short, Sightings Of Bono, makes it into the shops for the first time on February 24 as a bonus DVD which comes with the Greatest Irish Bands compilation.
An all-Irish affair, the 7-minute film tells the story of a Dublin girl who, after glimpsing the U2 singer all over the capital, finally comes to face to face with him in the shop where she works. Featuring a cameo from the great man, it was shot at such glamorous locations as the Stephen's Street branch of Abrakebabra.
Obviously aimed at the drowning the shamrock Paddy's Day market, the album it accompanies features well-known tracks by Thin Lizzy, Sinéad O'Connor, Boomtown Rats, Clannad, The Pogues, Stiff Little Fingers, Rory Gallagher, The Cranberries, The Corrs, Hothouse Flowers, The Undertones, Van Morrison and, natch, U2.
If that's all a bit too corporate for you, February 24 also sees the unleashing of the delightfully titled Celtic Punk: Shite 'N' Onions. Artists featured include Blood Or Whiskey, Bates Motel, The Tossers, The Steam Pig, The Spunk Lads and the not nearly rude enough sounding Siobhan.
