No jail for owner of Sin Nightclub
The general manager and joint owner of Sin nightclub, Ciarán Gray, was spared a jail term for the Temple Bar club's failure to pay music royalties.
The Irish Music Rights Organisation (IMRO) had sued Gray, his fellow director Paul Griffin, and Pcard Taverns Limited due to non-payment of fees associated with the playing of copyright music. They secured judgement against all parties, as well as an injunction against playing songs without a license.
Today, Gray paid part of the €1880 fine, and, provided the outstanding balance is settled within a fortnight, IMRO agreed to lift the ban on playing protected songs.
The rights organisation, which represents artists and composers, and is responsible for collecting their royalties, had brought a motion seeking the imprisonment of both directors for failure to obey a court order. Gray's partial payment, however, satisfied Judge Jacqueline Linnane, who adjourned proceedings until July 28th.
