New Irish Songs To Hear This Week
Check out some of our favourite Irish songs from the week below:
Damien Dempsey, ‘Seoithín Seothó’
Damien Dempsey’s new single ‘Seoithín Seothó’, the second to be taken from his forthcoming album Holywell’ is an ancient Irish lullaby, a Suantraí, that the singer originally heard in a Joe Heaney album, which was brought back to his memory while visiting Carna, where Heany hailed from. “I was transported back in time to a rich bardic indigenous past that’s still very much alive and kicking there,” Dempsey reminisces, “meas mór, dia dhaoibh Connemara.
“At the end of the song a choir of Connemara angels join us,míle buíochas to Silé Denver, Caoimhe Ní Fhlatharta.Séamus Ó Flatharta. Étáin Ní Churraoin. Máire Ní Churraoin, draíocht. I’m singing this song to myself for 20 years, but it was JJ Ó’Dochartaigh, Naoise O’Cairealláin, and Liam Óg Ó’hAnnaidh and Manchán Mangan that gave me the courage to record it, míle buíochas a chairde.”
Damien DempseyAaron J. Burke, ‘Day By Day’
Kildare singer-songwriter Aaron J. Burke has released his latest single, ‘Day by Day’. Showcasing an indie rock sound that echoes the style of U2, the track explores themes of hope, ambition and the yearning for a better life. Driven by strong guitar melodies and rhythm sections, Burke’s strong vocal performance makes the track a noteworthy new release.

Makeshift Art Bar, ‘Discipline’
“‘Discipline’ is an illustration of the effects of propaganda on an individual within the military-industrial complex. It is horrifying when stripped back to its pure action and not cunningly hidden away as a euphemism,” say Makeshift Art Bar about their latest release. And that hits the nail on the head. 'Discipline' is a sharp, deliberate statement, executed with precision.
Blurring the line between electronic music and rock, the track delivers a powerful hybrid sound. Joseph Sweeney’s lyrics are raw, which adds an intense edge to the song’s driving force.

Irish rap trailblazer Travy reunites with longtime collaborator Elzzz and Fred again.. on new single ‘DID IT AGAIN’, a track created live during a Twitch stream hosted by Fred last year and performed in Dublin at RDS Simmonscourt in November. In the new track, the trio capture a unique intersection of worlds, Irish rap, UK underground culture and global electronic music, exploring reflection, memory, and personal growth.
Travy says of the track: "People always ask why us, but the energy me and Elzzz have when we come together is unstoppable, and you can hear that on this track once again. We've already made history as the first rappers to get a No. 1 album in Ireland, and Fred again.. tapping in with us on this song just shows why. The line 'they said the aura threatening them' speaks to experiences we've had where parts of the mainstream Irish industry found it difficult to digest our style of music because it's so different from what's traditionally consumed here. Regardless, we've stayed resilient and dedicated to the craft. The truth behind the lyrics and the story of how it all came together makes this song more than just a tune, it's a moment in itself. Especially for the people who've been with us from the beginning and witnessed the journey. We're all enjoying this together"

Darren Flynn, ‘PINEBOX’
The Irish singer-songwriter stays true to his Americana-infused folk and country roots in his new single, ‘PINEBOX’.
Flynn’s ability to convey sentiment and meaning with his trademark musical style makes this an immensely engaging track.
“I wrote the song a few years ago when I started to notice all of these populist far-right movements beginning to spring up throughout Europe,” said Flynn.
“All of them championing nationalist and jingoistic ideals. Two things struck me - that the last time such a thing happened, the ultimate result was war between neighbouring countries, and that those who were supporting the demagogues were the ones who could ultimately pay with their lives, not the demagogues themselves.”

Sailing Stones, ‘Days Come, Days Go’
Taken from her upcoming sophomore album Slow Magic, Sailing Stones continues to mesmerise with the release of her compelling new single, ‘Days Come, Days Go '.

“It was a particularly stressful time,” Lindfors reflects. “My daughter was ill, and the only way she would sleep was if she was on me. It felt like my life was falling apart.”
“In that moment of lying on the floor with her, I had a sense of letting go of order and control despite the shitshow around me. It was a beautiful sunny day, and I was stuck inside; I couldn’t move. It was a brief, blissful kind of nihilism. It was like we were the only thing that mattered.”

Sorcha Richardson has announced her latest album, Draw The Outline, with the release of ‘Illinois Again’.
A stripped back arrangement of acoustic guitar and drums back whispery and intimate vocals.
The chorus is uplifting and catchy in melody, but the lyrics, “Don’t go get all in your head about it / baby that’s the only place I know “ permeate the track and give the song a sombre feel.
The latest release from Richardson is an introspective fusion of pop and folk that resembles Phoebe Bridgers both vocally and orchestration and tees up anticipation for her new album which is set for release on September 11.

David Keenan, ‘Protest Song’
David Keenan’s new track comments on the political situation in Ireland, through a simple folk melody.
Keenan mentions recent political demonstrations for the American planes that refuel in Shannon Airport.
The guitar playing is similar to Bob Dylan’s ‘Mama You’ve Been On My Mind’ who he nods to in the chorus.
“I ain’t no Bob Dylan, but instead of doing nothing at all/ I sat down and wrote a protest song."
The melody is simple while Keenan tackles complex issues like social housing, mental health and cost of living.

Like her other tracks this song tackles complex issues with remarkable maturity and smooth vocal delivery.
The arrangement is stripped back and simple with just Sarah’s voice and an acoustic guitar.
The track is introspective and self observant, in contrast to her first single ‘Blind Eye’, which was about outward empathy.
This introspection and loneliness is exemplified by the isolated orchestration, with the peal of layering being some gentle harmonies in the chorus.

First Class and Coach, ‘Tears of a Liar’
