Forget Juan Mata to Man U, the big transfer news is Neil Prendeville and his controversial talk show moving across town from Cork’s 96fm to Red FM.
Despite – or perhaps because of – several high-profile controversies, he’s been the most listened-to man on local radio with 116,000 tuning in every day.
“It’s a difficult thing, leaving behind a radio station that I have been with since its infancy,” he tells The Examiner. “But contracts by their very nature are terminal. They have a life. There have been occasions over the last 25 years when I had offers to go elsewhere. But because I was in the middle of contract, I couldn’t go.
“This was different. The stars were aligned in the sense that my contract was running out and it suited me to look at other things.”
While it remains to be seen how he fits in with their more youth-oriented programming, gaining both him and Today FM man Keith ‘KC’ Cunningham is certain to boost Red’s profile and shake up the Cork radio market in a major way.
Prendeville starts his new morning show on March 31 with KC helming breakfast before him.
