MGMT benefit from live visit
Widely regarded as one of the breakthrough acts of 2008, MGMT have bounced back into the top 10 with their Oracular Spectacular album.
The album has now been 34 weeks in the charts, with only Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad boasting a longer tenure, among current top 30 albums. It moved up three places this week, to No.8.
The band's single 'Kids' also made a surge back up the charts this week, despite the fact that it has been available for 15 weeks. "It just shows the effect that touring can have on record sales," one industry insider told Hot Press. "On occasion there can be tension between record companies and promoters, on the basis that live music takes so much of the music spend in Ireland – but there's no doubt that the fact that MGMT were coming to town for shows at the Anbassador gave another boost to their album sales." Both the band's Ambassador shows sold out.
A new jewel in the SonyBMG crown, Oracular Spectacular is one of the hit albums of the year. Hot Press understands that sales are currently in the region of 30,000. And rising!
