Margot Robbie Will Produce and Star in I, Tonya
It has been confirmed that she will get her skates on to play disgraced Figure Skater, Tonya Harding. For those who may be unaware, the scandal surrounding Harding in the 90's was suitably coined The Whack Heard Round The World and ruined her career.
The 25-year old Australian rose to prominence as the sassy Mrs. Belfort in 2013's The Wolf of Wall Street but in the two years following she has proved herself time and time again with excellent character choices. Her next chosen role will be in the biopic I, Tonya.
Tonya Harding was an two-time Olympian and an American figure skate champion. Her battle to becoming the athlete she was, was hard fought and she struggled with prejudice throughout her career due to her impoverished 'trailer trash' upbringing. For years, Harding struggled to achieve top spot in figure skating through determination and perseverance. However, in 1994, Harding relied on morally corrupt methods in beating her competition, namely Nancy Kerrigan. In the run-up to the 1994 World Figure Skating Championship, Harding, along with her then husband Jeff Gillooly, paid an accomplice to break Kerrigan's leg. The incident went awry and was caught on camera sparking a media frenzy that spread across the globe.
Rivalry conspiracy of this kind was unheard of, especially in the squaky-clean image that was associated with figure skating. Gillooly turned against Harding during the trial and she was eventually found out as the instigator of the incident and pleaded guilty. Shrouded by the scandal she was disgraced of her former titles and banned from the sport.
Steven Rogers has wrote the script for the biopic. Robbie has seen the potential the script has to offer and is set to play the controversial figure. She will also co-produce the film via her production company LuckyChap Entertainment.
With no director set for the bill, it will probably be another while yet before I, Tonya makes it way to cinema screens. However, you can see plenty of Robbie between now and then as she stars in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (April 22), The Legend of Tarzan (July 8) and Suicide Squad (August 5).
