The Cranberries: “Linger” (Island)

While other indie-minded types worry about manifestoes, agendas and which -ism to vent their spleen against this week, The Cranberries push the bullshit to one side and gift us a song that’s as simple as it is breathtakingly beautiful. It’s possible to wax lyrical all day about Dolores having the voice-of-an-angel-crying-tears-of-warm-honey but the Limerick band’s biggest asset is an adherence to such traditional values as bothering your arse to come up with a hook and melody. Even if you’ve already got the album, the live versions of ‘Pretty’ and ‘Waltzing’ make this a purchase worth selling the family pet to the glue factory for.
