Julia Holter, A$AP TyY, Alabama 3, Ann Brun & Coachella star in Free Music Friday
There's also a side-order of Ciaran Lavery, Lisa O'Neill, Diplo, Deftness & David Byrne
We’re currently looking down the back of the sofa, searching under our bed and frisking our jean and jacket pockets to see if we can find any more money to put towards our Record Store Day 2016 purchases, of which there will be many!
To get you pumped up for all that power shopping – apologies in advance to the people we elbow out of the way to get to that David Bowie The Man Who Sold The World picture-disc – here’s another bulging collection of Free Music Friday downloads, streams, vids and trailers.
Our favourite FMF thing this week is Best Kept Secret, an ace 19-track mixtape from A$AP TyY who’s been one of the busiest Mob members of late.
Alabama 3 are sharing the Ege Bamyasi remix of ‘Lost And Found’, one of the tunes from their new Blues album, which drops in September and apparently marks a return to the militant Exile On Coldharbour Lane politics of yore.
Fermentors of the 1976 Revolution, Wire, outdo themselves with Nocturnal Koreans, a record that’s as far removed from punk orthodoxy as it’s possible to get. Also making their NPR bow this week are Rufus Wainwright who's Bard at it with Take All My Loves: 9 Shakespeare Sonnets; LA fusion merchant Carlos Nino whose Flutes, Echoes, It’s All Happening! takes you on a thrilling sonic journey and New Lane Road, the latest from country-favoured West Coast popster John Kelley.
We’ve a serious crush on Ike & The Crooked Souls, Nashville neo soulsters who gift us five songs of heartbreak, regret, hope and redemption.
To celebrate the news that Julia Holter and fellow genre-bender Circuit Des Yeux are coming to Dublin in November, here they are doing what they do so brilliantly...
Ann Brun was in typically mesmerising form when she dropped by the NPR offices for a Tiny Desk Session. Also bringing work to a musical halt there recently were quiet is still the new loud Bostonians Palehound and glammy queercore duo PWR BTTM.
Lisa O’Neill has premiered the video for ‘Pothole In The Sky’, the title-track from her new album, which drops later in the month. We doubt you’ll see or hear anything more beautiful this week.
Ciaran Lavery has released a second single from his Let The Bad album, which drops in May. It’s called ‘Okkervil River’ and should be on every Irish radio station’s A-List!
Diplo’s Mad Decent label has launched Good Enuff, a site offering free daily downloads. The first is a squelchy acid number from Aussie mad for it merchants Command Q.
Nico Muhly and Ira Glass feature in the first trailer for Contemporary Color, the documentary follow-up to the tour of the same name which saw David Byrne taking to the road in the US with ten regimental flag spinning troupes. The resulting performances were spellbinding.
If you’re too busy to fly out to Coachella this weekend, fear not, because the Californian festival is coming to you courtesy of two live streaming channels.
Pull the curtains, crack open a bottle of something crafty and enjoy!
Deftones are giving Spotify users an upfront [link]open.spotify.com/embed/album/3tsXyEbUQehXPaRFCS8K1n[/link] listen to their new album, Gore, which is every bit as in yer face as it sounds. The video for lead single ‘Prayers/ Triangles’ is equally terrifying.
Musicians from all five continents join forces in The Music Of Strangers, the cross-cultural brainchild of cellist Yo-Yo Ma, which has been superbly documented by HBO.
And that’s where we take our Free Music Friday leave of you for another week. Have a wonderful Record Store Day and keep those lovely links coming to @stuartclark66
