Jazz Legend Wayne Shorter comes to Limerick
As part of his special 75th birthday world tour, Jazz giant Wayne Shorter will open the MBNA Shannon International Music Festival with the Irish Chamber Orchestra this July.
The nine-time Grammy winner makes his Limerick debut at the University Concert Hall on July 9.
Composer and saxophonist Wayne Shorter helped redefine jazz not once but twice, as both the creative power house of Miles Davis’ extraordinary 60’s quintet and as founder of 70’s 'fusion' band Weather Report.
More recently, Wayne has toured with comrades including Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams, as well as forging new alliances with Joni Mitchell and Carlos Santana. He adds five unabashedly adventurous musicians to the original Wayne Shorter quartet, formed in 2000, for the Limerick gig.
Support will be provided by New York wind quintet Imani Winds, known for their adventurous programming and diverse American, African and Latin American influences.
Tickets are priced between €25 and €45 and are available from www.uch.ie or by calling 1890 923 54.
MBNA Shannon International Music Festival runs from Wednesday July 9 to Sunday July 13. For more information and the full festival line-up, check out www.irishchamberorchestra.com.
