Jape narrowly avoid Slovakian festival tragedy
One fan has been killed, and nearly 100 injured though.
Richie Egan has been Tweeting about the tragic death of a fan who died over the weekend at the Pohoda festival in Trencin, Slovakia.
“Oh my God,” he writes, “our stage blew down. One person is apparently dead and loads injured. Fuck, this is so sad. We were getting ready to head down to the site to soundcheck when it happened. I feel so sorry for the person who died.”
The festival, which included Basement Jaxx, Razorlight and Klaxons among its headliners, was instantly called off and the 10,000-strong crowd evacuated. Along with the 29-year-old local man who died, 40 people were taken to hospital and 52 given first aid.
"There are a huge number of experts and surveyors at the scene,” says Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak promising a full investigation into the tragedy. "The professional help was provided very quickly, which I highly appreciate. The visitors to the Pohoda festival themselves took part in it, which made the rescue work easier. Therefore I want to express my appreciation for the civil courage shown as well.”
The police are currently studying amateur video footage (below), which was shot seconds before the tragedy occurred.
