Irish Singer/Songwriter Kalikah Makes Controversial Debut
Local musician Kalikah debuted her new single 'Black and White' with an impromptu performance in Cork on Good Friday.
Making a big impact with a memorable introduction, Kalikah gave the general public of Cork their first taster of what she has to offer with a one-off, top-secret performance on Patrick Street last weekend (Friday April 14). Walking through the city centre’s main street dressed in full theatrical costume, Kalikah was accompanied by a host of eager followers, each one wearing black and white to reference the name of her first single, which was released this week.
The name Kalikah, meaning ‘dark one with inner light’, represents what the artist and her music stands for: duality, polarity, opposites and most of all, empowerment – a theme that runs through all aspects of her work.
The context of her "polarising" performance is likely to be deliberate too. Taking to a busy street complete with a cross on Good Friday has some uncomfortable overtones, and could be regarded as blasphemous to the more holy amongst the Leesiders.
We doubt this'll bother a woman who said of the mixed reaction and of her critics: "Art is meant to comfort the disturbed – and disturb the comfortable."
