One Million Dubliners Wins Big at New York Festival World Awards 2016
The resting place of over 1.5 million souls, the Glasnevin Cemetery is an iconic Dublin landmark and was the subject of the 2014 documentary One Million Dubliners.
Despite its release 2 years ago, this touching documentary is still having a profound impact. It picked up the Silver Medal for a Documentary at the New York Festival World Awards in Las Vegas.
The award ceremony rewards outstanding work in international film and TV so it is a huge triumph for the makers of the documentary. Since its premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2014, One Million Dubliners has been the recipient of several awards and appraisals. Directed by Aoife Kelleher and commissioned by RTÉ, One Million Dubliners investigates the fascination and beauty that the Glasnevin Cemetery beholds. Speaking to those who work in the cemetery, those who visit the cemetery and reflecting on those who are buried there, the documentary leaves no stone untouched. The glue that sticks the narrative together though is the late tour guide Shane MacThomáis whose love, passion and pride in the Cemetery shines through.
Director Aoife Kelleher was beside herself with joy as the documentary was celebrated once again and she took the opportunity to thank the individuals who made One Million Dubliners such a heartwarming and relatable work; "We are very grateful to the staff of Glasnevin, without whose support and generosity One Million Dubliners could not have been made, and to the family and friends of the incomparable Shane MacThomáis.... It's wonderful that audiences around the world have taken the film into their hearts.”
One Million Dubliners has already picked up the gong for Best Feature Documentary at the Galway Film Fleadh and the Boston Irish Film Festival and it was voted in as the Best Irish Film 2014 by readers of The Times.
One Million Dubliners is available to buy on DVD in all good DVD stores.
