Emergency motion 'to save The Complex' passed by Dublin City Council
The Complex received a notice of eviction in December.
An emergency motion to 'save the The Complex' has been passed by Dublin City Council.
Cllr. Janet Horner, Green Party councillor for Dublin North, took to social media to announce that her emergency proposal to save the Smithfield arts venue was passed at the Dublin City Council meeting last night. The Complex received a notice of eviction on December 3, requiring that the venue vacate the space by January 14.
"My Emergency motion on saving the Complex has passed tonight on Dublin City Council. The ball is now in the court of Ministers Simon Harris, Jack Chambers and Patrick O'Donovan, to put their money where their mouth is," wrote Horner.
Since receiving the notice of eviction in December, rallies in support of keeping the venue open have been held in front of the Daíl, and the "save the complex" petition has received over 16,600 signatories. Additionally, a number of musicians have performed gigs at the venue in support of the Save The Complex campaign, including Junior Brother, Curtisy, The Scratch, BIG SLEEP and Cruel Sister.
Several other Dublin cultural spaces have closed in recent years, including Jigsaw, Block T, Mambos, Tivoli Theatre, Hangar and Bernard Shaw.
