Dublin City Council Dublin City Fleadh: Celebrating the rich tapestry of Irish traditional music in the heart of Smithfield Square
For two days across Saturday 23rd & Sunday 24th August, from 12-6pm, the cobblestoned expanse of Smithfield Square celebrates Dublin’s vibrant tradition of Irish music, as the Dublin City Council Dublin City Fleadh returns for a much-anticipated fourth year.
Set in the heart of Smithfield Square, the Dublin City Council Dublin City Fleadh – a FREE, unticketed, family-friendly festival – celebrates the rich tapestry of Irish traditional music with a dynamic blend of acclaimed and local artists.
Audiences can expect a lively mix of traditional and contemporary music, plus dance performances that have made the event so memorable in the past. The festival promises a rich celebration of Irish music and culture throughout the weekend.
Organised by Dublin City Council in collaboration with local artists, musicians, community groups, and cultural institutions, the Dublin City Council Dublin City Fleadh offers a modern, urban take on the traditional rural music festival. The event honours the spirit of the ancient Irish gathering—where music, dance and folklore were passed from generation to generation.
The Fleadh headliners include world renowned fiddler Frankie Gavin, co-founder of the fantastic Irish folk group De Dannan. In addition, Gavin has recorded with The Rolling Stones and Stéphane Grappelli, and performed for four American presidents.
Frankie performs at the Dublin City Council Dublin City Fleadh alongside legendary musician Noel Hill, one of the greatest influences on the development of the modern playing style of the Irish concertina. Fellow headliners Zoe Conway and John McIntyre, meanwhile, have been described by the BBC as “simply one of the best folk duos on the planet”.
Zoë has also performed as a guest soloist with world renowned orchestras, toured with Riverdance, and worked with such renowned acts as Rodrigo y Gabriela, Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, Nick Cave and Lou Reed.
Further festival highlights include performances from Irish dancer and choreographer Edwina Guckian; Irish trad duo Mick O’Brien & Caoimhín Ó’Raghallaigh; singer and storyteller Kitty Cassidy; and fiddle and concertina duo Caitlín Nic Gabhann & Ciarán Ó Maonaigh.
Other superb acts to check out, meanwhile, include The Fingal Mummers, Síbéal Davitt, Louise O’Connor and Keane Connolly Gorman. Elsewhere, there’s also The Cobblestone Tent, curated by The Cobblestone Pub, and a brand new arts and crafts tent.
With engaging interactive sessions, lively Céilís, and workshops for all ages, this promises to be an outstanding weekend of traditional Irish music, with plenty of opportunities to interact with the artists.
So, whether you’re a lifelong Dubliner, a recent arrival, or a visitor passing through, the Dublin City Council Dublin City Fleadh welcomes you with open arms and ears. Come join the celebration!
Smithfield Square is easily accessible by public transport. The Smithfield Luas (Red Line) stop is right on Phoenix Street North beside Smithfield Square, and many Dublin Bus services stop near Smithfield.
