Cramps lead singer Lux Interior passes away
Rock has lost one of its most colourful characters with Cramps frontman Lux Interior passing away yesterday in a Californian hospital from a pre-existing heart condition.
The 62-year-old, real name Erick Lee Purkhiser, formed The Cramps in 1972 with Poison Ivy who went on to become his wife.
Relocating in 1975 to New York, they found a ready home in CBGBs, and were an integral part of the city’s burgeoning punk scene.
Memorably described as “a lanky, proto-goth Elvis”, Interior and his bandmates were a huge influence on other American acts likes The White Stripes, Marilyn Manson and The Misfits. They had their admirers on this side of the Atlantic too, with The Dagger Lees, The Things, Humanzi and The Urges all members of their Irish fan club.
