COUNTDOWN TO CROKE PARK: We've got all the best U2 road stories in our new issue!
Interpol's Sam Fogarino kicks things off with his 360 Tour tale about David Lynch.
As U2 make their triumphant return to Croke Park, Hot Press has been getting all the best backstage stories from some of the big names who’ve toured with them!
Here’s a brilliant, little told tale from Interpol’s Sam Fogarino. Our full interview with Sam features in the Hot Press U2 Croke Park Collectors’ Issue, out this Thursday with guess who? on the cover.
"I have one more little anecdote that I never really shared with media. I was just talking about this the other day. The first U2 show we played was in Paris, and that day, earlier before the show I went and met up with David Lynch, who was printing an art show in one of the oldest lithograph places in Europe.
"I was having some coffee with him after and I was being real coy about what we were doing in just a few hours… and I got schooled by David Lynch for being a little too nonchalant. And when I felt this panic on stage, that sense of 'Oh my god there’s 65,000 people here' or whatever, I just recalled David Lynch’s pep talk (laughs). I wish I had a way to kind of transcribe it, because it felt like a very personal, surreal, Twin Peaks-type moment. Except it was real!
"In a nutshell, he kind of called me out on being too much like, 'Oh, it will be fun.' And he’s like, 'Fun? Boy, you gotta go out there and show ’em who you are. This is no casual affair!' (laughs). And he says, 'You gotta take it by the balls, man!' I was just floored that it was actually happening. It was like David Lynch posed as my dad for ten minutes and gave me some advice. It all happened surrounded by this U2 show. So I thought I’d give you that."
Buy our U2 issue from July 20. You can also Buy 41-12: U2 direct from hotpress.com, or download the iOS app for iPad.
