We suspect this is the start of a beautiful love affair!
As previously reported in Hot Press, Cashier No. 9 have signed on the dotted line with Bella Union, the celebrated UK independent whose roster also includes The Low Anthem, The Walkmen, Fleet Foxes and Explosions In The Sky.
The label had their attentions drawn to the Belfast five-piece by none other than David Holmes.
“I had a call from David out of the blue and he told me a story that made my heart sing,” says label boss Simon Raymonde. “What he’s been doing for Cashier No. 9 was, in so many ways, what I’ve been doing with Bella Union. Bringing bands to my studio, recording them and producing them at my own expense, just ‘cos I loved them, that was how Bella Union worked in its early years when the label had the use of our Cocteau Twins studio. Hearing David speak about the band in this way, I was naturally intrigued, but a good story would be somewhat empty without some plot and substance. So interest firmly piqued, I listened to the album that night and was blown away by it all. These are not songs for the sake of it, they are songs with heart and soul. The album has a deep soul, and I imagine this is what David saw. I now see it too, and I’m delighted to welcome the band to the Bella Union family. They already feel part of it to me.”
Praise indeed. Cashier No. 9’s debut The Death Of Fun album will be released by Bella Union later in the year, but first the chaps have an EP, Goldstar, out on their own CN9 imprint on April 25. Among those lending a hand are power pop god Jason Falkner, Sly Stone’s horn section – there’s a rude joke in there somewhere – and American harp ace Tommy Morgan.
