Lest we forget, The Libertines are primarily about making music. When that music is good, they’re fantastic, when it’s bad the effect is painful. ‘What Became Of The Likely Lads’ skirts dangerously between the two, highlighting the fact that they can’t actually sing or play that well, but have the charm to win out at the end of the day. As with the amazing ‘Can’t Stand Me Now’, the Pete / Carl standoff is addressed in the lyrics and gives the track an extra drama that others certainly lack but you still can’t help but view each successive release as a potential swan song.
