You can't go an Easter Sunday without stumbling across the 1959 Ben-Hur on the telly somewhere but this classic has now been totally revamped.
The trailer for the new Ben-Hur is here and looks like it's going to be the big blockbuster of 2016.
Narrated by Morgan Freeman (which in itself lends it that God-like quality), the remake of Ben-Hur spares no expense. There's Romans, revenge, not-so-healthy sibling rivalry and of course, chariot racing.
It's been 57 years since Charlton Heston donned the robes of Ben-Hur in his Oscar winning performance and it is now the challenge of Jack Huston to revive the legacy. The film is the adaptation of Lee Wallace's Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ and the plot remains much the same for the remake (albeit more violence and nudity is a guarantee).
It's the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a noble prince who is falsely accused of treason by his resentful adopted brother Messala. He is arrested and thrown into slavery thus being separated from his beloved wife. In a dramatic turn of events, the ship he is slave to becomes shipwrecked and Ben-Hur finds himself stranded on a island where he meets the ever-wise Ilderim. It is Ilderim's knowledge and training that prepares Ben-Hur to enact the ultimate revenge on his malicious brother.
The cast stars Jack Huston, Morgan Freeman, Nazanin Boniadi and Toby Kebbell and is directed by Timur Bekmambetov. Whether it will be a faithful and dutiful adaptation of the 1959 classic remains yet to be seen but either way, we reckon this one is going to make some big bucks in the box office.
Ben-Hur will be in Irish cinemas on August 26.
