Sophomore album from Lisa Hake
Dundalk-based West Virginian singer-songwriter Lisa Hake has released her second album Wind Under Wood.
Hake has described Wind Under Wood as a collection of surrealistic story songs involving Tarot cards, Worry Dolls, and the Theory of Relativity. It features Hake on acoustic guitar, banjo and mandolin, accompanied by the renowed James Blennerhassett on double bass.
As with her debut album Tree Over Sea, the album title of Wind Under Wood is derived from an I Ching hexagram that describes the way of the gentle but penetrating, suggesting that what is most mild can also be most powerful.
A demo of recordings for Hake’s new album prompted Jackie Hayden of Hot Press to call it a “fine showcase for her introspective soft-rock approach, oozing confidence and panache…with mellow ‘60’s overtones… straddling a number of genres, from folk to indie rock, without ever falling over.” Hake has a “mellifluous voice, soft melodies and introspective stories” according to O2 Making Waves. In the US, a DJ from Virginia described Hake as having “a voice like a young Emmylou Harris and fresh rootsy-rhythmic arrangements that …recall recent Iron & Wine.”
