Rosalía says Bono reached out to her for Spanish-language advice in the making of Carnaval de Luz
"We normally just write songs about people in jail or dead people," Bono said. "This is just celebrating somebody just because they're an extraordinary artist."
Rosalía has said Bono reached out to her for Spanish-language advice while working on U2's upcoming song inspired by the singer, 'The Mirror Maker (Rosalía)'.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, Rosalía explained that although she has never met Bono, the two have exchanged messages about the track, which appears on U2's upcoming album Carnaval de Luz.
"He was asking me if it made sense, certain words," she recalled, explaining that one of them sounded like "marmalade." After looking it up and finding no equivalent in standard Spanish, she told him, "Feel free to invent your own language."
Rosalía described the tribute to her and her 2025 album, Lux, as "mind-blowing," particularly because she grew up listening to U2.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Bono explained the inspiration behind the song, describing Rosalía as an artist willing to look beyond conventional boundaries.
"We normally just write songs about people in jail or dead people," he said. "You know, dead heroes, or trying to get them out of jail. This is just celebrating somebody just because they're an extraordinary artist.
"It's just a little embarrassing that she became so popular before we put out the song," he continued. "But that doesn't matter to me. Everyone knew about Martin Luther King too."
He also mentioned that Penélope Cruz had encouraged him to contact the Spanish star. The pair have since chatted about their mutual love of Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.
Their first LP since 2017's Songs of Experience, Carnaval de Luz arrives during U2's 50th anniversary year and has been described by The Edge as a "messy, provocative, sacred collection of songs."
Two songs have already been released as previews to the album - 'Street of Dreams' and 'Silencio', which U2 played at a few surprise gigs in Dublin two weeks ago to mark their anniversary weekend.
Fontaines D.C. are also preparing to release a collaboration with Rosalía on their upcoming album, Dopamine Chamber.
This weekend, the two-time Grammy-winning Spanish singer will serve as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.
