In keeping with the VMA's tradition for showcasing sensationally gauche performances, Miley Cyrus writhed and gyrated her way through a rendition of Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and into social media lore.
With only the plain old English language at our disposal, and a policy of not being too luridly graphic online, her performance is difficult to describe. Let's just say it was highly suggestive and left the crowd gaping open-mouthed at the stage.
The audience was strangely subdued and rather pale looking after the display, with the reactions of Will Smith and his family proving particularly popular on Twitter
