The Irish hip hopper has voiced his support for fellow refuseniks The Original Rudeboys.
The Original Rudeboys made headlines around the world last month when they declined an offer to support Chris Brown, citing the R&B man’s assault on Rihanna as the reason.
“With our latest single ‘Blue Eyes’ being about domestic violence it goes against everything we’re about as a band,” singer Sean Walsh expanded. “Supporting Chris Brown would send out the wrong message to our fans.”
It turns out that the Rudeboys weren’t the only conscientious objectors, with Maverick Sabre revealing that before the Dubliners were approached he also said “no” to Brown.
“I got offered Dublin and Belfast as well, but I turned it down,” he tells Hot Press. “I said to the Original Rudeboys I supported their decision when I found out about it. I’m not a fan of Chris Brown’s music, but it’s the Rihanna situation I objected to.”

The Hackney-born, New Ross-raised hip hop man was talking to Hot Press after appearing on the 250th birthday edition of Never Mind The Buzzcocks alongside Heidi Range, Andrew O’Neill, Seann Walsh, team captains Phill Jupitus and Noel Fielding and guest host Richard Madeley who revealed himself to be an authority on Badly Drawn Boy.
“It was alright,” Mav reflects. “I can be a comedian at times, but when you’re on with four professional comedians and they’re all trying to be funnier than each other, it’s best just to keep quiet so you don’t get gunned!”
For Maverick’s thoughts on Irish hip hop and the Gardaí’s demonisation of “electric” music, see the Christmas issue of Hot Press out on Thursday, November 29.
