Lucinda Creighton: Politics in Ireland "a boys' club"
In the new issue of Hot Press, Fine Gael TD Lucinda Creighton also admits to underage drinking, believes Feminism isn’t relevant anymore, and gives her views on Charlie Haughey, Willie O’Dea and Bertie Ahern...
Regarding the current state of Feminism, Creighton tells Hot Press, "I don’t know too many women in politics who would brand themselves as being feminist. I certainly don't. I don't feel the need... I don't think that tag of 'feminism' is relevant anymore."
When asked if she would have an abortion if she became pregnant as a result of being raped, she emphatically says "No, I wouldn't, no."
Despite her Catholic views, Crighton admits, "I couldn't tell you the last time I went to Confession", and when asked if she thinks homosexuality is sinful, she says, "I don't."
As for politics being a boys' club, she agrees. "There's no doubt about that. It's slow (to change) in politics because most women in their right mind wouldn't even dream of a career in politics. It's a very tough environment. So, for that reason there’s a huge dominance of men, and inevitably it is a bit of a boys' club."
She admits to a dislike for Charlie Haughey from a very young age. "In my childhood, Charlie Haughey would have been a pretty major figure in Irish politics, and I didn't like him. I didn't like what I saw."
And Bertie Ahern? "I do believe that Bertie Ahern, if found guilty of an offence, should be in prison."
