Watch: CMAT reveals official music video for single 'EURO-COUNTRY'
In her new tune, the country singer takes a swipe at former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern
CMAT has just released the music video for the title track for her upcoming third studio album, EURO-COUNTRY, set to release on August 29 via AWAL Recordings.
The new song follows her gig at Glastonbury's Pyramid Stage three weeks ago, where she performed a medley of back catalogue tunes and new music.
In the fresh single, the Dunboyne native makes a dig at former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his time in government during the 2008 recession and subsequent financial crisis.
"All the big boys, all the Berties, all the envelopes—yeah, they hurt me. I was 12 when the dads started killing themselves all around me. And it was normal, building houses that stay empty even now, yeah," the lyrics say.
The music video shows the singer in a backstage dressing room, sitting in front of a well-lit vanity mirror, before the scenery changes to North Dublin's Omni shopping centre.
Dressed in a baby-blue shirt that reads "Bertie," she is seen dancing around the mall, acting as a mannequin in an empty window display, and splashing in the indoor fountain.
CMAT's choice of location reflects the inspiration behind 'EURO-COUNTRY': "I have certain phrases that reverberate around my head over and over again—and EURO-COUNTRY was one of them. It’s the title of the album and the name of the first song on the record."
She added, "It means three things to me: it’s the kind of country music I make, the fact that Ireland is a European country run by the euro, and that capitalism is one of the worst things to ever happen to us."
The country singer will be playing at All Together Now next weekend and is set to perform a sold-out show at Dublin's 3Arena on December 5.
