CMAT speaks out after Irish language was left out of 'EURO-COUNTRY' premiere
"I don't know if it was a mistake or what happened," CMAT said.
CMAT has spoken out about the Irish language intro verse from her new single 'EURO-COUNTRY' being left out during its on-air premiere Tuesday night.
The song was played for the first time on BBC Radio One. The introduction of the song, which features around 40 seconds of CMAT singing in Irish, was left out of the broadcast.
Shortly after the premiere, CMAT spoke to fans via an Instagram story. She confirmed that it was not her decision to leave the Irish portion out of the song during the premiere and that she was not aware the section would not be played.
"I don't know if it was a mistake or what happened," CMAT said.
"However, they [BBC] have just gotten in contact and said they are going to play the Irish language intro full version of 'EURO-COUNTRY' tomorrow to make up for it."
She said she had "no idea who" edited the song before it was aired, saying "that was crazy of them," and that the broadcast also removed the line, "I was 12 when the das started killing themselves all around me."
The BBC rejected claims that it edited out the Irish language intro verse.
"BBC Radio 1 did not edit the Irish language from this single, we broadcast the radio edit of CMAT’s new song Euro-Country that was supplied by the record label," said the BBC.
The line was a reference to the financial crisis following the 2008 recession, which led to a 57% increase in suicide rates among males in Ireland. 'EURO-COUNTRY' swipes at former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his time in government during the crisis, with CMAT donning a shirt reading "Bertie" in the music video.
At 12:30 p.m. today, BBC Radio One played the full version of 'EURO-COUNTRY' with both the Irish language intro and the "I was 12 when..." line included. Hosts introduced CMAT as "someone who killed it at Glastonbury last year" and mentioned that the song aired last night, but did not address her comments.
'EURO-COUNTRY' is the title track of her upcoming album, due to be released on August 29 via AWAL Recordings.
