To these ears at least, Low’s Things We Lost in the Fire was the most haunted, honest, harrowing and utterly moving album of last year. Here the trio tackle the Morrissey/Marr classic from Strangeways, Here We Come in their own inimitable slow-core way, augmented with a string quartet for some added climactic drama you wouldn’t expect from the Minnesotans. A new original composition ‘Because You Stood Still’ is classic Low – starkly beautiful and arresting. The Strokes and White Stripes may be a lot more fun, but these troubadours are by far America’s most compelling and brilliant band.
