King Crimson's first album in over twenty years is in the works
Guitarist Jakko Jakszyk has confirmed that the most recent King Crimson lineup – featuring himself, Robert Fripp, Mel Collins, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto, Gavin Harrison and Jeremy Stacey – has returned to the studio.
It has been reported that King Crimson's first studio album since 2003’s The Power to Believe is currently in production.
Since their last album, the group have been on multiple tours and released various live performance recordings.
King Crimson was formed in 1969 by Robert Fripp (guitar/keyboards), Greg Lake (bass/vocals), Ian McDonald (woodwinds/keyboards), Michael Giles (drums/vocals), and Peter Sinfield (lyricist/synth).
The band has undergone numerous lineup changes over the decades, with Fripp remaining the only constant member.
Co-founder Ian McDonald passed away in February 2022, shortly after the release of the acclaimed documentary In the Court of the Crimson King.
This was followed by the death of lyricist Peter Sinfield in December 2024 and former percussionist Jamie Muir in February 2025.
After concluding what many believed to be their final tour in 2021, King Crimson were thought by fans to have disbanded.
In a recent interview with Goldmine Magazine, Jakszyk revealed the band’s return to recording.
“As we speak, we’re doing a King Crimson album,” he said. “When that will come out and in what format or how – that’s beyond my brief. But yeah, we’ve been doing it piecemeal, and then a couple of months ago, the management said, ‘Can we?’ So, yeah. I’ve been recording that with a view to it coming out in some format at some point. But who knows when.”
According to Jakszyk, the new album will feature studio versions of several tracks previously released only in live formats, along with “some other bits and pieces [that] will emerge from putting it together.”
As of yet, there is no confirmed date for the follow-up record release.
