Irish-Indian MC JC-001 is to co-write and star in a modern opera based on the life and times of Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
Due to open in September at the English National Opera, it’ll feature Asian beats and rap in place of arias and romance, and focus on such dramatic moments as the US bombing of Tripoli, the Lockerbie disaster and the shooting of PC Yvonne Fletcher outside Libya’s London embassy.
Also providing music for Gaddafi, which will be accompanied by a ‘Making Of…’ film and documentary, are Asian Dub Foundation.
“The sheer adulation of Gaddafi, the cult of personality – the fact that he’s quite narcissistic, very concerned about his image. All of this says to me theatre, music,” reflects ADF’s Steve “Chandrasonic” Savale.
As well as touring with the likes of Courtney Pine, Nitin Sawhney and Natasha Atlas, JC-001 was the co-presenter of an early ‘90s RTÉ music series, Electric Ballroom, which was shot in U2’s Clarence Hotel.
