Dubliner Annie Mac lands BBC Radio One show
After two years of working behind the scenes at BBC Radio One, Dubliner Annie Mac has been given her own Thursday night dance show starting in July.
Part of a large musical family, Mac got the clubbing bug while studying English Lit at Queens University, Belfast.
"I bought a third hand set of Soundlab decks and a Gemini mixer and a big box of unwanted records off my mate for £150," she says. "Then I set about learning to mix. I couldn't afford new records, so I would buy old soul and funk 12"s from charity shops and try to scratch with them."
Her big break came when, having moved to London, she landed some freelance broadcast assistant work at Radio 1. Within three weeks she was made a full-time staff member working on Steve Lamacq's Evening Sessions and the Colin Murray and Zane Lowe programmes.
"I couldn't have asked for a better show that defines me and what I stand for," she says of her 9 to 11pm slot. "I'm absolutely over the moon and can't wait to get started."
