Grant McLennan: “Don’t You Cry” (Beggars Banquet)
With ‘Don’t You Cry’ Grant McLennan seems to have edged even nearer the kind of profound yet elusive simplicity that haunts all great art. Taken from the forthcoming double album Horsebreaker Star this slice of effortless melody canters along with such apparent ease that the heart rending bravery of the heroine of Grant’s story threatens to slip by unnoticed. But, of course, it doesn’t. Two hearts are broken. There’s violence, loneliness and longing, all for the price of an undefined search for something more. The Go-Betweens aren’t dead, they’ve just gone (nuclear) fission!
