Derry Front Runner For 2013 Fleadh
The largest Irish trad festival in the world could well be coming to the North Western city.
Developments over the past week strongly suggest that Derry will become the first location north of the border to host the world-renowned festival for traditional Irish music. Their Fleadh bid took a massive step forward after event organisers Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann held a special meeting.
The Ard-Chomhairle, including chairperson Labhrás Ó Murchú, met to discuss the Derry bid having recently visited the city.
Comhaltas Dhoire Chairperson Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh said Derry was in the best possible position to host the event: “We continue to be impressed by the support we have been given by Comhaltas members from across the country. The goodwill towards Derry really cannot be overstated. The indications so far have been extremely positive."
Now, it's up to the County Derry board and Ulster Council to support the proposal, which would push it on to a formal decision in January.
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is the largest Irish traditional music festival in the world, attracting a quarter of a million visitors and over 10,000 traditional music performers each year.
