David Bowie's favourite songs revealed, including 'Across the Universe' and 'Tom Violence'
The David Bowie Centre is set to open on September 13.
A list of David Bowie's favourite songs have been discovered. These include 'Across the Universe' by the Beatles, Tom Violence by Sonic Youth, and 'Mother of Pearl' by Roxy Music.
The V&A East Storehouse in London is set to open a new David Bowie Centre on September 13, archives made up of objects representing symbols of David Bowie and his career.
The archive contains over 90,000 artifacts related to David Bowie; some of his guitars, outfits he wore on stage, handwritten song lyrics, and plans for a musical he was writing before his death in 2016. Among the archive is also a note written by Bowie titled "Memo for a radio show- list of favourite records", which lists his favourite songs.
"In the Centre, we want you to get closer to Bowie, and his creative process than ever before," Said V&A East curator Madeleine Haddon. "For Bowie fans and those coming to him for the first time, we hope the Centre can inspire the next generation of creatives.”
Bowie publically praised several of the listed artists. In 1975, on his album Young Americans, he covered the listed track 'Across the Universe' by The Beatles. John Lennon provided vocals and guitar for the recording of Bowie's cover.
” ‘Across The Universe’… was a flower power sort of thing John Lennon wrote," Said Bowie in 1975. "I always thought it was fabulous, but very watery in the original, and I hammered the hell out of it. Not many people like it. I like it a lot and I think I sing very well at end of it. People say I used John Lennon on the track… but let me tell you… no one uses John Lennon. John just came and played on it. He was lovely.”
The room containing these artifacts was kept locked after Bowies death, so all items were left untouched before items were organised to be sent to the centre and reviewed by archivists.
