Last Saturday saw the close of Belfast rock pub, the Rotterdam Bar.
Following extended disputes with the landlords, the Rotterdam Bar and Pat's Bar in Sailertown, Belfast, ceased trading last weekend.
A renowned music venue, the Rotterdam had previously seen appearances from the likes of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Steve Earle, David Gray and Snow Patrol.
The bar closed for a time around a year ago, and risked being demolished to make way for apartments, but following an extensive campaign – including an article in Hot Press – it was re-opened under the temporary control of former owner Chris Ruddy.
The 'Save The Rotterdam' campaign attempted to get the bar listed as a building of historical significance, but it now may face demolition, as the former owners suggest in a message posed on their MySpace:
"Control of the bars have now been handed back to Mr. Arthur Mooney, a Belfast hotelier and property developer who intends to demolish both of the buildings the minute he has all the relevant planning permissions in place."
The message goes on to thank everyone who helped keep the Rotterdam alive, with the former owners saying they hope to return with the same ethos.
Refunds are available for upcoming gigs scheduled to take place in the venue. The Andy McKee gig on May 5 will be moved to another venue. Check www.myspace.com/rotterdambar for details.
