Bandcamp bans AI-generated music
"With this policy, we’re putting human creativity first, and we will be sure to communicate any updates to the policy as the rapidly changing generative AI space develops." the streaming service said in a statement.
Bandcamp has banned AI-generated content and music from it's platform.
To safeguard artists from intellectual property infringement, Bandcamp has introduced two specific rules regarding generative AI in music. The platform will ban any music or audio that is "generated wholly or in substantial part by AI," as well as any use of AI aimed at "impersonating other artists or styles," Users are encouraged to report any AI-generated content for review by utilising the platform's tag tools.
AI music has permeated most music streaming services, with AI-generated bands and artists like The Velvet Sundown and Broken Alter sparking discussion on AI's use in music. Deezer revealed that as of late 2025, 34% of new music uploaded to the app is fully AI-generated.
While Bandcamp has opted for an outright ban on AI-generated content, Spotify has chosen to integrate the technology.
“At its best, AI is unlocking incredible new ways for artists to create music and for listeners to discover it.” A statement on the Spotify website reads,“ at its worst, AI can be used by bad actors and content farms to confuse or deceive listeners, push 'slop' into the ecosystem, and interfere with authentic artists working to build their careers. That kind of harmful AI content degrades the user experience for listeners and often attempts to divert royalties to bad actors.”
Spotify maintains that it does not generate any music itself with AI. However, it does utilise the technology for features like personalised playlists and its AI DJ. The platform also hosts AI-generated music and recently stated it would be enforcing stricter rules for artists who fail to disclose their use of AI or use it to mimic established artists.
Bandcamp has stated they "reserve the right to remove any music on suspicion of being AI generated."
“Musicians are more than mere producers of sound. They are vital members of our communities, our culture, and our social fabric,” their statement continues. “Bandcamp was built to directly connect artists and their fans, and make it easy for fans to support artists equitable so that they can keep making music. With this policy, we’re putting human creativity first, and we will be sure to communicate any updates to the policy as the rapidly changing generative AI space develops.”
