Godspeed You! Black Emperor remove music from streaming platforms
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, following the lead of other bands, have removed their music from Spotify.
Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor have removed almost all of their music from major streaming platforms.
So far, the group have removed their music from Spotify and Tidal. Two of the band's albums, F# A# ∞ and Lift Your Skinny Fists like Antennas to Heaven, are still available on Apple Music, however, they are expected to be removed.
Their catalogue can still be purchased and streamed on Bandcamp.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor follow in the footsteps of other bands, Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, and King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, who have all pulled their music from Spotify in the last two months. The Canadian band has gone one step further, however, taking their music from all major streaming services.
The trend started as a result of Spotify CEO Daniel Ek's military investments. Since 2021 his investment fund Prima Materia has been investing in Helsing, a defence company whose software uses AI to make military decisions.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor's most recent album, released in October, 2024, is titled No Title As of 13 February 2024 28,340 Dead. The name refers to the Palestinian death toll at the time.
The band formed in Montreal, Quebec in 1994 and have since released eight studio albums.
