Countdown to Rye Lane - No. 3: 'Rollerblades' by Kwes
With the hotly anticipated rom-com Rye Lane hitting cinemas on Friday, we’re counting down the week by focusing on a different tune from its brilliant soundtrack each day. On Day Three, it’s cult electro guru Kwes’ 2013 gem, ‘Rollerblades’.
The Rye Lane score comes via Warp Records electronic wizard Kwes. The man from Lewisham, in London, is noted for his freakishly good production work with the likes of Solange, Bobby Womack, recent breakthrough artist Loyle Carner and Damon Albarn, amongst others.
Kwes collaborates with Tirzah and Sampha on a couple of sublime tunes for the movie. In addition to his original soundtrack work, however, the London groove technician contributes the exquisite electro ballad ‘Rollerblades’, a proper standout from his 2013 Warp album ilp (his only full-length album to date).
Boasting a typically imaginative soundscape topped off with a gorgeous melody, ‘Rollerblades’ beautifully fits the warm and romantic mood of Rye Lane, which – as we recall – focuses on two jilted strangers and music lovers, Yas (Vivian Oparah) and Dom (David Jonsson), whose relationship develops into a full blown romance, against the back drop of London hotspot Peckham.
‘Rollerblades’ is another standout on a wonderfully eclectic soundtrack, which also incorporates pop, hip-hop, grime, reggae and a whole lot more. It’s an essential collection to accompany one the year’s must-watch movies. Watch the spooky video here...
