Chromatics' Johnny Jewel scared by album success

Chromatics producer and leader Johnny Jewel has admitted he’s feeling the pressure after the success of latest album Kill For Love.

The album has garnered major support from critics but Jewel said he finds it a little daunting.

“It’s exciting that people are getting behind the record, but it’s also scary. It’s easier to make music when no-one likes it, or no-one’s listening! For a lot of music critics and fans, Kill For Love is a moment in their lives. For me, it’s my whole life.”

Critics have picked out the niche influences in the record but the reluctant star (he never wanted to be in a band) has no problem with the mainstream.

“The records that impacted my life are from mainstream artists. What I was trying to do was tap into things like Madonna, things you’d hear on the radio in the ‘80s.”

Instead Jewel likes his ignorance and links it to his own unique way of working and the long hours he spends recording.

“I was coming into music like an animal and I really wanted to protect that. I can’t write down my own music, that’s why I record.”
