Africa’s “reggae rebel” Tiken Jah has been unveiled as the headline attraction at the 2008 Festival of World Cultures, which takes place in Dun Laoghaire from August 22 to 24.
Originally from the Ivory Coast but now exiled in neighbouring Mali after the politically-motivated murder of several of his associates, the 30-year-old has been favourably compared to the likes of Bob Marley and Burning Spear, and scored a major international hit with 2007’s L’Africain.
He’s performing a free gig on the outdoor stage, with precise date and time to be confirmed.
Other highlights include Abyssinian swing merchants Éthiopiques (August 22, Pavillion Theatre); Tibetan a capella vocalist Yungchen Lhamo (August 22, Monkstown Church); West African griots Banaya (August 23, Pavillion Theatre); and Gogol Bordello offshoot Balkan Beat Box (August 24 Purty Kitchen).
