Garage takes Cannes award
Irish cinema received another major boost at the weekend, with the selection of Garage as the winner of the annual Art et Essai Award at the Cannes Film Festival.
The prize is presented by the International Federation of Art House Cinemas, whose jury represents over 3,000 cinemas in Europe, Africa, Asia and Latin America. One of the stated aims of the award is to "defend the right for cultural diversity."
The film, written and directed by Mark O'Halloran and Lenny Abrahamson – the team that were responsible for the brilliant Adam and Paul – appeared in the Director's Fortnight section at Cannes and it stars the comedian Pat Shortt.
Already acclaimed as a powerful and moving drama, Garage was produced by Ed Guiney whose Element Pictures were also responsible for last year's Palme d'Or winner, The Wind That Shakes The Barley – a film about the Irish civil war, directed by Ken Loach.
